My Frenchie

Everything you need to know about the breed we're fighting to save.

The French Bulldog

French Bulldogs were originally bred in England as miniature Bulldogs, and later refined in France where they gained their signature bat ears and compact build. Today, they're the most popular dog breed in America — loved for their affectionate nature, playful personality, and unmistakable charm.

But their popularity comes at a cost. Irresponsible breeding has led to a wave of health problems, and thousands end up in shelters every year. Understanding the breed is the first step to protecting it.

Breed Essentials

🐾

Temperament

Frenchies are playful, alert, and incredibly affectionate. They thrive on human companionship and are excellent family dogs. They're known for being adaptable, doing well in apartments and homes alike.

📏

Size & Build

Typically 11–13 inches tall and 16–28 pounds. They have a muscular, compact body with a smooth coat. Their flat face (brachycephalic) gives them their signature look but requires special care.

Colors & Coat

Frenchies come in brindle, fawn, white, cream, and combinations of these. Their short, smooth coat is low-maintenance but they do shed. Regular brushing keeps them looking their best.

Lifespan

French Bulldogs typically live 10–12 years. With proper veterinary care, a balanced diet, and a loving environment, many thrive well beyond that. Early health screening is key to a long, happy life.

Common Health Concerns

Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome

Their flat faces make them prone to breathing difficulties, especially in hot weather or during exercise. This can range from mild snoring to life-threatening airway obstruction. Many Frenchies require corrective surgery to breathe comfortably.

Spinal & Joint Issues

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is common in the breed. Their compact spinal structure makes them vulnerable to herniated discs, which can cause pain, mobility issues, and even paralysis. Hip dysplasia and patellar luxation are also frequently seen.

Skin & Allergies

The cute wrinkles and folds on a Frenchie's face need regular cleaning to prevent bacterial and yeast infections. Many French Bulldogs also suffer from food allergies and environmental sensitivities that cause chronic itching and ear infections.

Eye Conditions

Cherry eye, corneal ulcers, and entropion are common in the breed. Their prominent eyes are more susceptible to injury and dryness. Regular vet checkups help catch issues early before they become serious.

Caring For Your Frenchie

French Bulldogs don't need miles of running, but they do need daily walks and mental stimulation. Puzzle toys, short play sessions, and socialization are key to a happy Frenchie.

Temperature matters. French Bulldogs overheat easily. Avoid vigorous exercise in hot weather, always provide shade and water, and never leave them in a car.

Diet is everything. Feed a high-quality, limited-ingredient diet. Many Frenchies do better on grain-free or novel-protein diets. Work with your vet to find what works best for your dog.

Regular vet visits. With the breed's predisposition to health issues, bi-annual checkups are recommended. Early detection of spinal, respiratory, or skin problems can save your Frenchie pain — and save you money.
